Cleaning and Maintaining Vertical Blinds UK

All sorts of blinds, including vertical blinds are popular in homes as well as in businesses.  People often consider materials, blind types, colors, and patterns but fail to consider one even more important aspect of blinds.  That is how to clean and maintain those blinds to optimise both their function and longevity.

Many modern blinds have easy to clean Teflon coatings, also known as wipe free coatings.  The name is self explanatory.  Such vertical blinds can be cleaned with a simple wipe with a wet rag or cloth, or using some type of dusting spray.  Such blinds are excellent for high use or high ware areas, such as in kitchens or homes that have small children living in them.

Aluminium vertical blinds are fairly resilient.  They can take cleaning with wet cloths or rags, dust cloths or sprays, dusters, or even a vacuum cleaner.  Because these blinds are smooth they should dust and/or clean quite easily.

If the blinds are wood beware of using water or any type of wet or damp cloth.  In other words, don’t wash wooden blinds.  The wood absorbs moisture which then warps the wood, or discolor it.  Dust them with a dry cloth, or with dust spray, or vacuum with a brush attachment.  It’s important to use the brush attachment so the vacuum doesn’t scratch the wood.

Many fabric blinds can be dry cleaned.  A “P” sign is notification that a blind fabric is safe for dry cleaning.  If they aren’t dry clean labeled take other measures for cleaning the fabrics.  Fabrics used in blinds are anti-static, meaning dust and dirt tends not to stick to the fabric.  A vacuum brush attachment is sufficient for most cleaning.  However, if necessary, the fabric can be washed with a wet cloth (warm water) or even spot treated with a cleaning solution.  Always make sure to check the fabric for color fastness.  That means try some of the cleaner on an inconspicuous fabric corner to make sure the cleaner doesn’t bleed or fade the color.

It’s important to clean blinds because they look better when clean, and they can wear out if dirty.  Dust and dirt build up not only makes blinds look old, but can actually damage the material whether it is wood, metal or cloth.  It’s best to clean vertical blinds on a regular basis so build ups don’t occur.  Regular cleaning also assures that it will be a quick job. Some people hire experts such as carpet cleaning companies to clean their blinds. This really isn’t necessary, so save money for another use.  Know the material, follow the instructions, and if necessary contact the manufacturer who can share the cleaning and care information with a consumer.

Don’t forget that damaged slats can often be replaced.  There’s no need to purchase a complete new set of blinds.  Visit the store (or its website) where the blinds were purchased, or check the manufacturer’s web site for information on replacement slats.  For fabric covered slats the fabric generally comes separately from the slat itself.  Clean and maintain those vertical blinds not only for a better look, but for a longer blind life.
